'Dawn Treader' Treads Water Over Slow Weekend

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader opened with a weak $24.5 million at the box office.  This was enough to top a weak weekend, but compared very poorly with other films in the Chronicles of Narnia series.  The third film in the series, Dawn Treader is budgeted at $155 million.  The series was picked up by 20th Century Fox after original distributor Disney dropped the franchise following an underwhelming $141.6 million domestic gross for the second film in the series (Prince Caspian) measured against a $225 million production budget.  Worldwide grosses and home video helped Prince Caspian into the black, and it looks like that will be the case with Dawn Treader, as well.  The film grossed $88 million overseas, easily outpacing what it grossed domestically over its opening weekend.

'Tangled' Takes Down 'Potter'

In its second weekend of wide release, Disney's Tangled managed to take the top spot away from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.  The animated take on the Rapunzel story dropped 56% week-over-week, bringing in $21.5 million for a total of $96.5 million so far.  The film reportedly has a massive $260 million production budget, so it still has a long way to go before it's in the black.

'Potter', Family Films Dominate Box Office

Family-friendly films dominated the box office over the US Thanksgiving weekend, with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I bringing in another $50.3 million in grosses for $220.3 million to date.  The seventh film in the series is holding up well, taking strategic advantage of the holiday weekend to increase its grosses rapidly.  The film's weekend numbers were down 60%, but this is not surprising considering the film had a massive opening the week prior.

Walking Dead Shamble Into Second Season

AMC's The Walking Dead, the hit zombie series based on Robert Kirkman's fantastic graphic novel series, has been picked up for a second season after ratings for the first two weeks proved to be AMC's best in their history.  The pick-up was widely expected and it was rumoured that the deal was done prior to the first episode even airing.

The second season will be 13 episodes, more than doubling the first season's six episode pick-up.  Executive Producer, Writer and Director Frank Darabont has also been quoted saying that popular character Michonne will make her debut in the second season.

Harry Potter Magical

Unsurprisingly, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 took the box office crown over its opening weekend.  The seventh film in the series grossed a whopping $125.1 million since opening on Thursday night.  Previous films in the Harry Potter series have had total domestic grosses in the $300 million range (and typically close to or exceeding $1 billion worldwide).  Deathly Hallows Part 1 is on an early track to match, or even exceed, those grosses as audience anticipation of the final chapter in the popular series opening next year builds.
